File-sharing on New Media

File sharing, an indispensible part of everyone's life who uses the internet. Almost everyone shares files on the internet nowadays, with so much methods of file sharing. Using file sharing, people can share files legally and illegally. However, I am gonna discuss about how people share files legally using new media.

Using new media, file sharing has never been more easier. Without new media, sharing software would be troublesome. Imagine wanting to send a little program you created to a friend in another country. You would have to burn it to a cd/dvd and send it to your friend through mail. Your friend might/might not receive your package. However, with new media, you can upload your files on hosting sites like mediafire.com, megaupload.com and such. After uploading, all you have to do is to paste the links where the file is uploaded to and voila! Your friend can download the file easily from the net instantly, without having to wait for you to mail it.

Many companies now use new media to distribute their files, more for games, when they release their games online so people can download them and provide feedback on the game. In some cases, users report bugs, so the developers can come up with patches, and the patches will be available online for the users to download.

However, new media can be a double edged sword too. People have been using new media to upload copyrighted files like pc games, mp3 music, movies and etc. Of course, measures have been taken to ensure this doesn't happen, but piracy has triumphed thus far.

Personally, I think file sharing on new media is a good thing, it allows files to be shared faster and it really is convenient because you can access your file anytime and anywhere, as long as you have a computer with a internet connection. This is my take on file-sharing, what's yours?

  1. Dear unwilling blogger - you should have chosen a different format, then.

You mention a few useful ideas about legal and illegal file-sharing. Do you have any specific cases that you came across in your reading and research? Do cite sources and do give us some links to your readings.

  2. Hello,

I feel that you have brought some positive light into the use of new media. Indeed, file transfer via the internet through the use of new media has brought about a greater convenience than what many people has imagined. Now information reaches many people in all forms, with a speed that is absolutely amazing.

New media has indeed brought about a speed up in the advancement of humanity. However, like what you've said, new media has been causing some criminal activities too. What we can do is basically to try and use it positively rather than negatively.

  3. I think that file sharing is good but people tend to download the files illegally rather than purchasing them online.

  5. People normally download the files rather than purchasing them online is because they want to have this files but dont wish to buy if possible.
Thats why people download and some may categories as illegal downloading.

  6. People download files illegally because most files that are downloaded legally have limitations imposed by Digital Rights Management.

I think this is the main reason why people turn to illegal downloads since they get the freedom to do whatever they want with it and it is free of DRM.

  7. Sharing file is hard to defined as legal or illegal, when we download the file, we don't know that if the file is original. but those people putting the illegal file on the internet must be punished.

  10. Good information on topic.
Those who care, they share. Those who dare, they share. True illegal's unfair but millions of this activities are still running unaware but why care? Its unfair to the needs to share. File-'shares' then. Kudos to napster to forefather this trend.

  11. Indeed file sharing leads to piracy. But come to think of it, where do most of your songs,tv shows, movies in your computer come from?

  12. Even though I do not support file sharing completely as it might infringe copyright rules, I really like the idea of file sharing. It allows someone to share almost anything, be it artworks, our own composed music, to another user that could be overseas miles away from us. The only setback is that some people misuse this convenience and upload musics, videos and games for share, which is illegal.

  13. Hm, good thought. I've never actually really considered downloading files from the internet as something being legal and convenient. Now that you've highlighted it, I realised how much of a hassle it would have been to transfer many files or large files between persons if the internet wasn't here.

I think it is rather unfair that nowday's, downloading anything from the internet is more associated as an illegal activity. I think to popularise legal downloading of softwares, music, movies, games, etc., the companies that distribute them should consider selling digital formats of their products on the internet and at a more reasonable price.

I feel that it is quite sad as there are some people who purposely upload music, videos and games illegally. In the long run,I feel that not only it would reduce the lucrativeness of being a game creator or singer, it would demoralize future and upcoming game designers or musicians and at the end, we would be the ones crying as there would be a lack of good games or artiste.
